The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kaduna State University (KASU) branch, has officially resumed its suspended indefinite strike action. This move comes after the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU approved the request made by the branch congress, signaling a renewed phase of industrial action effective from April 24, 2025.
In an official statement released by the union and signed by the branch Chairman, Dr. Peter Adamu, and Secretary, Dr. Peter M Waziri, the strike was declared due to the Kaduna State Government’s failure to honor previously agreed commitments.
Issues in Contention
According to the ASUU-KASU statement, the following unresolved issues triggered the resumption of the strike:
- Payment of withheld salaries from May to September 2022, among others.
- Unpaid Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) dating back to 2016.
- Outstanding promotion arrears and SIWES supervision allowances.
- Group Life Assurance and other entitlements for deceased staff members.
- Non-remittance of pension contributions between 2009 and 2019.
- Non-implementation of the 25% and 35% wage awards.
- Lack of progress in restoring university autonomy.
The union condemned what it described as a “breach of trust” by the Kaduna State Government, accusing it of failing to keep to its promises and uphold the agreements made during earlier negotiations.
ASUU-KASU ended the statement with the union’s popular slogan: “Aluta continua, victoria ascerta!”
Implications
The resumption of the indefinite strike is likely to disrupt academic activities at Kaduna State University, affecting students, research work, and administrative operations. It also signals a broader concern about the state of public university education in Nigeria and the challenges faced by academic staff nationwide.
Final Thoughts
As this development unfolds, it remains to be seen whether the Kaduna State Government will respond swiftly to avert a prolonged shutdown. Stakeholders, including students, parents, and education advocates, are urged to follow the situation closely and demand accountability from all parties involved.
